Whenever I make a pogača (Serbian rustic bread), I feel the scent of tradition and the warmth of home. In my kitchen, flour and yeast are more than just ingredients – they are part of a story, a legacy passed down from hand to hand. I learned to make pogača from my mother-in-law, a true expert in everything related to dough. Her pogačas are as soft as her soul, fragrant, and always perfectly baked. With her advice and secret tricks, I have managed to master this skill. Every pogača I make carries a piece of her, a piece of me, and the unmistakable taste of homemade love.

@Carmen Velasco Thank you…it’s not spiced bread. In Serbia, pogača is traditionally made for special occasions like family gatherings, holidays, and celebrations. It’s an essential part of Serbian Slava, weddings, and festive meals, symbolizing warmth, hospitality, and togetherness.

Whether for a holiday table or a simple Sunday lunch, a freshly baked pogača always brings a sense of home and tradition. A special example is the Božićna česnica, a Christmas pogača with a hidden coin inside.

There are many types of pogača, varying in texture, ingredients, and preparation, depending on the region and occasion. The most important tradition is that it’s not cut with a knife but broken by hand, symbolizing unity and shared blessings.

I feel completely hypnotized by these photos! Do the concentric shapes hold any special meaning, or are they just beautifully decorative? 🤩

There’s something deeply poetic about the way you describe the act of making pogača—almost like kneading memories into the dough itself. The connection between technique and tradition is something that elevates great baking beyond mere precision. Since you’ve mastered the wisdom passed down from your mother-in-law, I’m curious—what’s the subtlest trick she taught you that makes the biggest difference in texture or flavor? 🍞✨

@soldamiani In this case, the shapes are decorative, while the Božićna česnica, or Christmas pogača, is decorated differently and carries its own special religious symbolism.

For a perfect pogača, it’s essential to use fresh and active yeast, knead the dough well, and let it rise in a warm place. Adding liquid gradually helps achieve the right texture, preventing the dough from being too dry or too sticky. Brushing it with egg, milk, or butter gives it a shiny and crispy crust, while baking without opening the oven too soon ensures it rises properly. After baking, wrapping it in a cloth and letting it rest for a few minutes keeps it soft.

However, the most important ingredients are always patience and love. 💞

Congratulations, your bread looks amazing. We have this word pogácsa, too. But it doesn’t mean a whole bread. It is a soft savory cookie with cheese on the top.

It is so nice to know that pogácsa connects us… in a way. 🙂🙂🙂
